The surf reef officially opened in November 2009. It has proved to be one of the
more controversial projects undertaken by Bournemouth Council in recent times.
It has been the subject of much speculation as to whether it would work or
not,add to that the delays and overspend and it has really stirred up some
strong opinions.
The surf reef is part of a larger project including the
remodelling of the pier,the sale of the Honeycombe Chine car park [ and the
subsequent building of the Honeycombe Beach development ] ,the Overstrand surf
pods and the updating of the pier approach area including the erecting of the
granite sculptures.
The surf reef is to be monitored for a year by an
independent body to establish how it is performing.

Photo taken from clifftop on East Overcliff Drive [East Cliff so called because
it is east of Bournemouth Pier although pic taken from west of Boscombe
Pier].Work on remodelling the pier is complete with work continuing on the
Honeycombe Beach / Honeycombe Chine development[ hence the crane ].Boscombe
beach continues for around a mile past the pier before becoming Southbourne
beach.As the coast sweeps around to the right in the distance we can see
Hengistbury Head, the tip of which is just out of shot to the right.Everything
in view is part of Bournemouth.
