grant  - Winter Gardens circa 1900   |Fri-11-2009
The Winter Gardens Exeter Rd. This is the original one built in 1877. A large
conservatory with walks through areas of indoor planting.seating and
refreshments which were ''especially desirous during inclement weather''.It
became a concert hall in 1893 [ home to the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra ].It
was demolished in 1935 and replaced, in 1937, by the Winter Gardens brick
building that was demolished in 2006. The latter actually opened as an indoor
bowling green before its conversion to a concert hall and was home to The
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. It also hosted performances from people as
diverse as Max Bygraves to Jimi Hendrix. The demolition of the Winter Gardens
caused a fair amount of controversy and was bitterly opposed by some.Since 2006
the site has been a car park although there are plans to place a temporary
tourist attraction there in 2010.
Suzanne Fagg  - winter garden programmes   |Mon-08-2010
My mother recently passed away and in her possession I found a number of
programmes from the Winter Gardens dating back to 1951 when she was the Matron
at a Convalescent Home in Bournemouth. I was wondering if you would be
interested in having these programmes as I did not want to burn them. Please let
me know if you are interested or know of anyone who may be.
At present these
programmes are in Zimbabwe but I can arrange for them to be sent to
you.
thanking you
Suzanne Fagg
