grant  - sydenhams royal marine library   |Thu-02-2010
Sydenhams Royal Marine Library and Reading Room stood on the site now occupied
by the Waterfront building [ imax ].
John Sydenham was trading in Poole as a
stationer and book seller when in 1840 he moved to the fledgling Bournemouth and
established his library and reading rooms at the nearby Belle Vue Boarding House
[ hotel ]which stood where the pavilion now stands with its frontage facing pier
approach.
At the same time he also produced the towns first guide
book.
Despite the sign on the front of the building in the above picture
declaring it to have stood on the site since 1876 it was infact built in 1865
and can clearly be seen in photos from that era.

Prior to the above building being erected in 1865 the site was occupied by a
smaller single storey building that may have housed the towns first
baths.
Sydenhams remained on the site and in family ownership until 1935 when
it was demolished to make way for the Pier Approach Baths.
Apart from the
library and reading room there was also, at one time or another, a post
office, telegraph office, newsagents,pr inters,a fancy fair selling all manner of
goods from perfume to bath caps, mounted photos of the surrounding area and even
a pianofotre repository.
The rear of the building also housed Sydenhams baths
that offered vapour baths of varying descriptions.
