Looking across Pier Approach from East to West, the pier is out of shot on the
left. The area opposite is generally known as the West Cliff although the part
seen here is more accurately described as the South Cliff. The path opposite
is the West Cliff clifftop promenade that still exists today. The group of horse
and carriages that are blocking the RH side of the entrance to the clifftop prom
is where the Hot Rocks surf restaurant now stands..
The road going off to the
right is Exeter Rd that today is carried over the pier approach to meet up with
Bath Rd, by the flyover constructed in 1972.

In the photo, if you were to travel up Exeter Rd you would quite quickly come to
South Cliff Rd on your left. South Cliff Rd ran between the rear of the main
buildings seen in the photo and infront of the buildings visible in the
background. A little further up Exeter Rd on the left [ where the BIC main
entrance is now ] was Cliff Cottage Rd named after Cliff Cottage a thatched
cottage built circa 1812 that first occupied the South Cliff and was home to
Charles Darwin for a month in 1862. The area is now the site of the Bournemouth
International Centre [ BIC ]. All the buildings seen in the photo, most of which
became hotels, no longer exist except one.....

The building in the centre of the RH side of the photo [ with the large and
small triangular side gables ] was built in the 1860's as Madeira House. It has
also been known as the Court Royal Hotel and the Madeira Hotel. Since 1947 it
has been the Court Royal Convalescent Home for the South Wales Mining Industry.
Viewed from the same angle today it is dwarfed by the BIC that looms large
behind it. South Cliff Rd mentioned earlier still exists as a short cul de sac
to service the building.
In approx 1910 the building was doubled in size and is
twice as wide as seen here. It is still possible to recognise the original LH
side of the building from photos taken in the 1860's.
In 1898 Marconi received
the worlds first commercial radio broadcast sent from the Isle of Wight, on an
aerial he had set up in the front garden of Madeira House.
