Looking from Exeter Rd across Pier Approach into Bath Rd. The new Pier Approach
Baths opened in 1937 on the site previously occupied by Sydenhams Royal Marine
Library and Reading Room [ 1865 to 1935 ]. Behind the baths going up Bath Rd
towards the Royal Bath Hotel were three large detached hotels now the site of
the Bath Rd south car park. The one nearest the Royal Bath was the Rothesay hotel
which became the Rothesay museum.

The Rothesay museum was home to a collection that included early Italian
paintings, pottery, porcelain and various Victorian items. It was also home to
one of the largest private collection of typewriters in the world.[ 260 to be
exact. ]
When the Rothesay building was demolished [ 1971 ] the museum moved
across the road to the large white building on the Lh side of Bath Rd which had
been the Hants and Dorset bus depot, and also the corner house cafe, that stood
until the early 1980's.
The flyover didnt appear until 1972.

The Pier Approach Baths was home to a 100ft by 35ft swimming pool that held
150,000 gallons of water circulated constantly to ensure a complete change of
water every 4 hrs.It had seating for 600 spectators and was home to the resident
summer aqua show that included displays of high diving and synchronised
swimming.
The building was demolished in 1986 and the site remained vacant
until late 1998 when work on the Waterfront building [ imax ] began.
