WH Smith still occupy part of the building known as Southbourne Terrace.
It
was built in 1865 by Henry Joy who also built The Gervis Arcade and the
Westbourne Arcade. Southbourne Terrace is the oldest surviving building in The
Square and one of the oldest in the town.
Southbourne Terrace is visible in a
lot of the very early photos of The Square from as far back as the 1860's.
On
the far side left the buildings stand on the site now occupied by Clarks shoe
shop and Boots.
