Old Christchurch Road 1960's PDF Print E-mail

Many thanks to Ann Roberts who sent in this image. She lived on Old Christchurch Road as a child and teenager from the 40's - 60's.

Ann comments on this photo, "I was stood with Dean Park Crescent and Horseshoe Common to my left.  If I remember rightly the large shop on the right was the Gas Showrooms.  Holy Trinity Church can be seen in the distance."

I too lived in Old Christchurch Road, close to where the photo was taken, from
birth (1945) until 1966. Yes, I remember The Gas showroom. My mother used to
visit it frequently because they used to give cookery demonstrations there.
Above it was Pearl Assurance. One morning I was standing on the pavement just
back from where this photo was taken. I was talking to my mother when something
caught my eye - it was a man falling. He had thrown himself from the roof of the
building, his and arms were extended to his sides. He fell on a van from a
refrigeration company in Poole (Aish), dented the bonnet, bounced off and landed
in the road. It was a sight which haunted me for ages.

There were happier
memories - La Lupa, the first pizza restaurant in Bournemouth just up the road
from the gas showroom, the Badger Bar, and the bowling alley, the coffee bar
called the El Cabala and the 81 Club near Dalkeith Steps.

I lived at 97 Old Christchurch Rd. with my parents from 1947 to 1968. I attended
St. Pauls School fom the age of 5 and was als a chorister at St. Peters Church
opp Beales from the age of 7 I still go to St Peters on a regular basis but live
in Southbourne.
Horseh oe Common I regarded as my back garden - because we
occupied a top floor flat with no garden. Access to our accommodation was via
Dalkeith Steps and a lane behind Dalkeith Hotel.
As a schoolboy I was very keen
on cricket and still am to this day also autograph collecting was one of my
hobbies. Much of my school holiday was spent watching Hampshire at Dean Park and
collecting autographs both at the ground and waiting outside the Grand Hotel
(which became the Badger Bars). Most of the county teams used to stay there. Then
of course there was the
Theatre Royal I remember obtaining autographs of such
stars as Frankie Howard,David Nixon,Billy Cotton, Sabrina etc.I lived o...

Hi Chris
You would remember (I think) as Phyllis Jelly, I lived next door to
Carole Kilshawe and was friendly with Alan Rowell. My mother and I lived at
115, so we were nearer to the Common. Cannot imagine today's youngsters having
as much freedom as we did.
I have recently got in touch with Carole and she has
told me that she sees you sometimes. How is the world treating you these
days?

The trolley bus wires bring back the atmosphere. Thanks for this.

We are looking up Old Christchurch Rd from its junction with Dean Park Crescent.
On the left about halfway towards the church is Madeira Rd and the next left
turn is Lorne Park Rd where the church stands on the corner.
The church is the
Holy Trinity Church built in approx 1869. In 1973 it was converted into a
medeival banqueting hall. It was destroyed by fire and demolished in 1978. The
site is now occupied by offices.
